Welcome to the offical website for Michael J. Smith's setting of Wordworth's ‘The Prelude’ - entitled by the composer: ‘A Song Of Faith’. It is a poignant, but proud reminder of the composer’s death only a week after the premiere on December 12th 2009.

‘The Prelude’ is the romantic poet Wordsworth’s long autobiographical poem, published in 1850. Composer and viola player Michael J. Smith (1941 - 2009) spent 16 years on a ‘labour of love’ – setting key texts from the work, and extracts from other poems by Wordsworth, as five separate oratorios.

If you are interested in any aspect of the piece, and particularly if you would like to perform it, please use the contact page to get in touch.

There are many other original pieces, notably for solo viola, viola duet and viola ensemble ( including settings of Gershwin, The Beatles, etc ). There is a particularly fine string quartet and a useful collection for teaching the violin. Choral works include 'Noahs Ark' and 'the Snow Queen' - a music drama for schools. Future websites are also in progress. Pencil drawings of The Lake District are reproduced with the kind permission from The Wainright Society.
